Free-wheelin'... Open House this Saturday... Nov. 17

[per email from Nancy Stimson]

"Dear friends and neighbors,
You all know about Freewheelin' Community Bike Co-op. It's a great place for kids to come and learn about bikes and much more, and for the neighborhood to come for repairs and great "re-newed" old bikes to ride! This Saturday, we're having an open house! We hope you can come - and bring your friends and neighbors. The invitation is attached with details. Feel free to print out several copies and spread them around - in fact, we'd appreciate it! Thanks for being there for us!
Yours,

Also... meet Joshua Weir...

Geeks In The House..... Praise God.

We're really thankful for the techs that show up at the cafe to help out for 'Ask Anything Saturday'. For example, today Alex Conner helped us a ton by trouble-shooting our wireless internet and curing the issue.

Alex is one of the 'Indy Christian Geeks' who are now getting together monthly for fellowship, learning and brainstorming ways to help the kingdom by using new media tools. [Stay tuned for announcements about 'BarCamp Indy'.]

In fact, he's now using his blogsite to produce training videos for some things you might want to know about out here on the 'information highway'. Stop in at his website and check 'em out.

Btw, a special thanks goes out to Alex's tech instructor at IUPUI... Dr. Thomas Ho... who put out the alert for cafe help today. [I guess so much of this just comes down to the cafe's GREAT HEARTS & GREAT CONNECTIONS!]

Or check out other new photos of some neat folks 'in the house' today.... [click to the UBcafe Flickr Pool]

In the house... today...

'New' faces in the house today...

My good friend, Ian Hookfin, is back 'in the house' at the cafe today. God working through him, Ian was the one who introduced me to the cafe... back in 2000. He was the Community Ministries director when I came to work at Tab and we quickly became friends.

[The then-pastor disparagingly referred to us as... "oh you fundamentalists". LOL. But that's a story for another day.]

Anyway, one day Ian said to me, "So ya wanna do urban ministry, do you? Well get in the car."

Ian drove me up and down the narrow streets near the church, and at one point pulled over to the curb on a pretty desolate corner... 30th x Central Ave... and said, "Get out".

I said in shock, "Say WHAT?"

He clarified... "Get out, we're going in. This is the Unleavened Bread Cafe. You're gonna love it."

[And love it I did. And love it I do.]

It was so good to see him again -- it's been way too long. He's now a PT (physical trainer) up in Carmel, and one of our techs at the cafe was able to help Ian with some web stuff....

[Bryan Rohrer, Internet Design Works, was back in the house today too. Thanks Bryan!]

Gloria & Brian Carter were also 'in the house' today. Brian's a DJ... traveling under the name "Bloodwashed!". He's also involved in the DeVos Urban Leadership Initiative, which helps optimally train urban youth leaders. I think Brian's been here lots of times before, and I'd met him before... but this is OFFICIAL now, because we have their 'photo at the banner'.

[So ya'll come... any Saturday... 10am. You're not 'official' til we get your picture 'at the banner' and upload it among all the cafe photos of our other friends!]

Video: "A Girl Like Me"

We're going to talk about this during our Friday morning Bible-study here at the cafe... Y'all come.

Hey, David, a new writer at the UBCafe

Neil and I are here at the cafe and I am learning about blogging. There is an awesome bible-study underway on fridays at the cafe dealing with racism in the church, where did it come from and how do we get it to go away?

My favorite site is... The Cause.

Cafe Board Meeting...

While 'board meetings' often get the rap of being 'bored meetings' (LOL)... this particular board (of the cafe ministry here) is EXCITING... as we see what God has done and is doing. The 'business' of the cafe is to do whatever we have to do to keep the hospitable front-door open... and we pray God will continue doing the rest.

New Urban Blogger... Pastor Bryan Hudson

"Today, I am joining the blogging community! Like a baby, a web log (the full name of "blog") require lots of care and feeding. It's not something I wanted to start before I was ready to commit to maintaining it. Well, I'm ready to do this!

My friends know..." [continued at Bryan's Blog]

Names & Faces...

Travis Davis & Shelley Webster

How are we going to get to know... and remember... other people... without PICTURES?

It's one of the things we do each Saturday morning at the cafe -- we get to know one another... and we take pictures. And just as the pictures are all different from each other... so are the people. We're all different. But very typically, Christ is the common bond at the cafe. The 'level playing field' is at the foot of the cross.

Here are the latest photos from the cafe.

Btw, you can ALWAYS get to our pix via this 'badge' in our sidebar at right.

*****************************************

If names & faces are important... then you can quickly see why Facebook.com has become sooooo popular these days. A number of our people this morning got their Facebook ID's -- thanks to Stephen & Tom helping out. And while Facebook itself is open to anyone, Christians are using it a ton these days... to connect & communicate. Example: 'City Reaching Movement'. Or CCDA 'group'.

[If YOU'RE not yet in Facebook, but would like to be... come on by the cafe for "Ask Anything Saturday"... 10am. We'll be glad to try to help get you connected. But remember... it's 'Each One Teach One'... so be sure to then help someone else get involved.]

In the house today... Author Melvin Fleming

Newly published workbook for faith-based mentoring... "Mission POSSIBLE"... by Rev. Melvin Fleming, Outreach Pastor at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church here in Indianapolis.

"MISSION:Possible! A Faith-based Mentoring Workbook is a workbook for Pastors, Christian Youth Leaders, Men's Groups, Missionary Groups and Evangelism Ministries.

The Mentoring process should not be taken lightly and this workbook is designed to meet the requirements of a structured program with staff meetings, progress notes, weekly reports, and a discharge summary. This workbook will help your group with lessons for the staff meetings, and an accountability process to evaluate the success of your program.

This workbook is an excellent tool for mentoring our troubled youth. The lessons on "Feelings", "Learning Styles," and "Where do I fit in the family" are designed to prick the hearts and mind or our youth, and make sure they do not become a part of a "lost generation."

This workbook has the flexibility to fit the urban setting or the suburban setting; saved and unsaved, rich or poor, black or white, learned and unlearned.

I, Reverend Melvin Fleming am currently the Outreach Pastor of the Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church. My parents, Deacon Thomas and Sister Mary Fleming, introduced me and my other sister and brothers, Jimmy, Marilyn, DeWayne and Eric, to Jesus Christ. I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior at Emmanuel in 1964, and was baptized there. My mentoring experience began in 2001 under the direction of the late Rev. Ananias Robinson and the Rev. Mel Jackson. They held a training session on Drug and Alcohol Addictions counseling at Emmanuel and my current Pastor, Rev. Darryl K. Webster encouraged me to attend My wife is Patricia Fleming and my son; Patrick has two lovely children, Tahj and Raven. We, as a family believe, "And we know, All things work together for the good, to them that love GOD, to those who are the called, according to HIS purpose" Romans 8:28. "

Here's an interview with Neil Hunt, one of the cafe's newest friends...

We don't want to start rumors.... BUT....

This morning at the cafe we were discussing the distinction of 'new media' (typically user-level media... including 'bloggers') vs. 'mainstream media' (newspaper, magazines, tv, etc.). One distinction is that somewhat often, 'bloggers' will break a story even before the mainstream media picks it up. There are many classic examples. But there is also an ongoing intimation by mainstream media (MSM) that the quality or veracity of bloggers' stories should be highly suspect. In that vein of controversy, we now run the following tidbit from the cafe...

Wonder what this crush of paparazzi at the cafe are zero'ing in on???

Click to visit the cafe's collection of photos at Flicker, and see if you can figure out which one is our 'scoop' story in the making.

Disclaimer: We don't want to start rumors, but here's a hint..... [click]

Picture Worth A Thousand Words?

Gotta love this pic, from Faith Hope & Love Week's Urban Projects Day recently at the cafe.

[click for better view - David Woodrupp & Neil Hunt]

It's like the picture of the Mona Lisa... you just never know...
  • Angry?
  • Listening carefully?
  • Stare-down contest?
  • "What are you intimating?"
  • "Why'd you take MY water?"
  • "How are we going to settle this?
  • "Now that we're all happy, how on earth are we going to reconcile OTHER believers?"
  • "Hmmm. What's our next step, Brother?"
Bottom line: Hospitality as a cross-cultural mixing place... That's one of the great elements of the Unleavened Bread Cafe. Come get to know people NOT like yourself? Care about others! Pray & plan together to make a difference in our city... on our watch.

Social Networking 4 Change... Today???

Today during Faith Hope & Love's citywide 'Urban Projects Day', we're also experimenting somewhat with the concept of social-networking for change.

So if you're visiting the site as a result of someone else asking you to, either via email, blogs, or official social networking sites like MyChurch, MySpace, Facebook, etc... PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT, and mention the avenue by which you came here today.

And of course, give us your thoughts about how we could accomplish yet more city ministry in the name of Christ, as a result of 'new media' today, such as social networking.

This year, Faith Hope & Love Week includes a special "Urban Projects Day" (July 24th) to build multicultural relationships & service together in the name of Christ.

The Unleavened Bread Cafe will be one such location as host to several 'projects'. We've started a wiki-page for all of us to use centrally to collaborate & coordinate these efforts of faith. Take a look... and see what YOU can help with...

Yet ANOTHER Great Use For Computers In Ministry?

[Personally, I cringed to see the flat-panel drop, knowing how much we'd have LOVED to have had it for our 'Ask Anything Saturday' program at the cafe. **sigh**]

Check out Rhonda's MyChurch.org site...

[Loved this pic when I saw it on MyChurch.org. Click for the real pic.]

Good job on your MyChurch site, Rhonda. And I'm anxious to see how it also helps develop a related 'church' website for Greater Faith House of Prayer. After all, the 'Church' is the PEOPLE. MyChurch helps connect & communicate among the people. And together, we can all acquire new computer skills & capabilities.

In fact, more than just computer skills. Recently, one of our Saturday morning guys at the cafe whom you've helped put up his wiki-page, was able to pick up some cash working with someone else he met on Saturday morning. And that's helping build a resume of work-experience for the future.

So again, thanks Rhonda (and everyone) for your leadership in connecting & communicating in the neighborhood.

BikeHiker: "I'm breakable."

[Many of you know Pastor John Hay from the cafe Bible study Wednesday mornings... ]

"I'm embarrassed about it, but it happened. Mountain biking with a couple of guys from church early Wednesday morning at Washington Township Park in Avon, I went off the edge of a trail bridge, fell eight feet, and really did a number on my ribs, back, right scapula, and sternum. A beautiful early-morning bike hike turned into torturous pain, an ambulance ride, trauma center care, and three days in a hospital bed.

John: 16 fractures, including two compressed vertebrae."

[But he can still blog! Continued at BikeHiker Blog]

Paul Williams... 50 years of achievement

Here are a couple of important photos taken at the cafe recently...

Paul Williams has been a neighborhood friend and businessman here in the Mapleton Fall Creek area of Indy. Paul operated the local laundrymat and was known by all. It was only fitting recently, as his friends and neighbors bestowed this award on him, recognizing & honoring his achievement and service among us.

"The Film That Failed"

I enjoyed finding this on YouTube so I could easily share it with all of you...

And I had to laugh as I watched it -- very funny, and very creative. Good job everyone!

Christine is the daughter of an urban pastor friend of the cafe... Pastor Bryan Hudson... who runs a MultiMedia camp for youth nearby. Check out their YouTube site... definitely cool!

Ok, now that we've seen Christine's handiwork... here's some handiwork from Pastor Hudson, the (very) proud father, as she recently graduated from Heritage Christian High School, with considerable achievements... including a $120,000 college scholarship.

Neighbor wikis...

There was a lot going on in the neighborhood this morning -- both inside and outside. Let me share the inside portion, and you'll see how it relates to the outside portion of activity today.

Inside, we continued building out our 'Ask Anything Saturday' set of wiki pages. And when I say 'we', I mean 'The Begats'.

Sister Rhonda ('Double R') is one of 'The Begats', and we'll be introducing you to some others in the coming weeks.

If you click to Sister Rhonda's wiki-page, she'll tell you about what's going on in the neighborhood today.

Celebrating with 'Rebuilding The Wall'...

Praise God -- Celebrating another RTW home completed!

'Rebuilding The Wall' is a neighborhood ministry not far from the cafe. You can learn a lot about it at their site (see link below). Often, volunteers stop in at the cafe for a hearty breakfast before heading over to work on the homes. And like the cafe, RTW is a solid advocate for 'Christian Community Development'. [visit CCDA.org]

[Grab a plate of ribs and come on in -- look around!]

We praise God for this ministry in the heart of the inner-city. And thanks for everyone's efforts of faith that helped this to happen -- modeling 'love one another' and 'love your neighbor as yourself'.

Chaotic Podcasting Training...

We're taking notes LIVE at our new 'AskAnythingSaturday.com' site... in this case under the PODCASTING topic. Scott & Kathy Wilder and their ChaoticChristians.com co-host Doug Pierce conducted today's special training. If you missed out on this fun training time (and such things as 'Chicks Are Hot'), come to the cafe on future Saturdays (10am) during 'Ask Anything Saturday', and we'll be doing some one-on-one assistance with these new technologies.

Scott emphasized again... everything we do here each Saturday is FREE & easy. You just have to know someone who can lead you to the free stuff and the easy ways.

And we're uploading pics from the cafe today as well....

Come join in any Weds morning...

[cut/pasted from an email from Pastor John Hay... BikeHiker.]

The Wednesday morning roundtable meets at 7:30 am each Wednesday. Its facilitators (unofficially) are David Metzger and David Weinschrott.

The table is open to anyone. Usually, anywhere from five to nine folks join in.

I’d say our focus is understanding the city and bearing grace, peace, and justice in the city (and particularly the urban neighborhoods adjacent to UB Café). We read and discuss either books of the Bible or books that challenge us. We’ve worked through the minor prophets, James, Hebrews, etc., and books like The Upside Down Kingdom by Donald Kraybill, God’s Politics by Jim Wallis, Making Room by Christine Pohl, a book by John Eldridge, The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and, currently, Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claiborne.

We have open and sometimes vigorous discussion…seasoned with a readiness to try to understand one another, give each other grace, and stay at the table. We pray together each time we meet.

Needed: A Small Screen

Anyone know where we could get a small pull-down screen for the cafe ministry?

Every Saturday... 10am at the cafe...

Sister Elease Womack... 'Mother Of The Hood'

Ya'll come. And no, it's not quite this nice EVERY Saturday at the cafe, but we'd like you to think of us this way -- we're always anxious for you to come get a hug and let us get to know you so we can serve our community TOGETHER.

We open every day (Tues-Sat) at 7am. But especially every Saturday morning at 10am, people are coming to participate in various meetings over coffee & pancakes (or whatever your favorite breakfast). Often, they're driven Christians from various walks of life, praying & planning together, to reach our neighborhoods with the good news of Jesus Christ. And all these people get to know each other as a result -- we don't allow no strangers at the cafe... at least by the time they leave, that is. Everyone gets to know everyone.

Ok, here are some of the newest friends we've made... [click the flickr-badge below]

And btw... If you've never been to the cafe.... here's a quick video you'll enjoy, to show you what it's all about... every day of the week...

Chaotic Podcasting... April 28

Our friends from the chaotic cornfields... Alex & Scott... are coming down to be with us again on April 28th... 10am... as we do a special training day at the cafe about... PODCASTING.

So start thinking about the capabilities you might like to learn that day, and how it could change your ability to communicate more effectively. You'd be very welcome to leave a 'comment' here... below.

In the meantime, tune into the ChaoticChristians.com website and observe some of their wacky [Oops, I mean innovative] ways of thinking... and their 'outside-the-box' ways of doing things.

And plan to be with us on Saturday, the 28th.

**********************
Seriously, these guys have been great friends since plugging in at the cafe -- we praise God for anyone & everyone who are anxious to accelerate the Great Commission and its loving impact in our communities... from the heart of the city, to the cornfields of the county.

Pastor Boyd visits the cafe this morning

Today Pastor Fredrick Boyd, Jr. stopped by the cafe to talk about updating the Creation Evidence Crusade website.
We enjoyed being able to help him -- Stay tuned we'll soon link to Damita's handi-work as she develops the new site for the upcoming Fall 2007 week of events.
And remember... everything we do here on Saturday mornings... is FREE. So pastors, leaders, anyone... come on down and ask your questions or get some help with a website of your own.
"Ask Anything Saturday"... 10am til noon... at the Unleavened Bread Cafe, 30th x Central Ave.
Btw, any of your churches or community centers out there that would like to help form a whole NETWORK of such TechMission locations.... come down and let's talk. That's a key objective this year -- to build out a whole network of community sites throughout the city... to facilitate 'connecting & communicating' among driven Christians in the Racing Capital of the World.

Btw, clarifying a bit... While we do regular training every week (Saturdays at 10am), we aspire to increasingly do 'special training' each week as well... but we're not there just yet. We will look forward to you guys coming to do podcasting training soon!

May God specially bless you guys, as you bless others!

Pix at the cafe...

Da Bears, Da Colts and Duh Neil ...and Ellen Spencer

Great day yesterday at the cafe!

Ellen Spencer gave us all some training on uploading/tagging pix, so we can share them easily. Make them useful, even. [Stay tuned for further training re how YOUR photos could be used by The Chronicle -- the Christian newspaper here in Indy & beyond.

And as always, some great new connections were made by all of us. More 'driven Christians' teaming up to change lives & communities. Praise God!

A special thanks goes out to Ellen, and to our new friends from Martinsville, the 'Chaotic Christians'. Scott Wilder came and did some video shoots to podcast shortly. Stay tuned at ChaoticChristians.com.
